Movie Night

On July 23, 2021, at the Peggy Calhoun Community Center located at 4243 WIll-O-Wood Blvd, The Association of South Jackson Neighborhoods (ASJN) presented its last drive-thru movie, “The Black Klansman”. The drive-thru movie was the brainchild of President Ernest Ward, who saw a need to uplift and comfort the South Jackson community during the 2020 pandemic. Mr. Ward was instrumental in getting corporations to provide funds to purchase all equipment needed to implement the outdoor drive-thru theater. His influence and art of persuasion with corporate sponsors also secured an old fashion popcorn machine and monthly supplies of hot dogs, chips, drinks and popcorn to feed all who attended.

While the movie was used to lift the spirits of residents and provide a family friendly activity, it was also used as a mechanism to support the two high schools located in South Jackson as a fundraiser. During each monthly movie, the football and baseball teams of Forest Hill and Wingfield High Schools served as carhops. The student athletes delivered food directly to patrons in their cars, all the while wearing masks and practicing social distance.

Whether you donated equipment and supplies, attended the movie, or served the patrons, ASJN salute you with a heart-felt “Thank You!”
