ASJN Volunteers for JPS Beautification Day
Last week the Superintendent of Jackson Public Schools, Dr. Errick Green, asked parents,
organizations and individuals to volunteer to prepare schools before students arrive on August
9, 2021 for their first day. On Friday, July 30, 2021, ASJN members joined a large group of
volunteers to render service to the Jackson Public School District during Beautification Day.
ASJN members worked alongside the faculty and staff at Marshall Elementary School located at
2909 Oak Forest Drive in South Jackson.
ASJN members, Willa Watson and Brittney Bowman, arrived at Marshall Elementary School
with donated school supplies for students and enough goodie bags for each faculty and staff.
Brittney Bowman began the day picking up trash along the block while Willa Watson joined
school personnel, Teresa Mack, Nicole Hills, Natalie Blackmon, Helen Young, Dionne Woody,
Dr. Kimberly Smith and Dr. Rachea Williams (Principal) to cultivate a flower bed around the
school marquee. Hezekiah Rogers, head custodian, came to the rescue with a shovel in hand.
The soil was a little tough, but Mr. Rogers managed to turn it over a few good times, enough to
plant flowers donated by Lowe’s and potato plants donated by Florine Keeler (ASJN member).
“When students arrive for their first day of school, we want them to enter into an environment
that is conducive for learning”, says Watson. The collective efforts of each volunteer to beautify
the campus of Marshall Elementary School was greatly appreciated by Dr. Williams and staff.
ASJN wishes Dr. Williams, along with the entire Marshall Elementary School Family, a great
school year! |
