Drive - Thru Movie Theater Friday night before Spring Break has always been an exciting time for school children. Friday night, March 12, 2021 was no different. The Association of South Jackson Neighborhoods (ASJN) opened its first Outdoor Drive - Thru Movie Theater to the South Jackson community in the parking lot of the Peggy Hobson Calhoun Community Center, 4243 Willowood Blvd. The idea for an outdoor theater was the brain-child of President, Ernest Ward. He realized the need to provide relief from stress and tension to families during the current pandemic and water crisis within the community. One way to relieve stress is to change the course of action and provide great quality family time. Hence, the drive-thru movie theater. This first drive-thru experience was a fundraiser for the football teams of Wingfield and Forest Hill High Schools and made possible by corporate sponsors AMR, Comcast, Bank plus, Cigna, Hinds County Supervisors Credell Calhoun and Trustmark. The sponsors provided funding to purchase all equipment needed to implement the outdoor drive-thru movie theater. Students chose the movie and provided suggestions concerning the types of refreshments to serve. While moviegoers watched “Madea’s Family Reunion”, both football teams acted as carhops and delivered great service complete with refreshments directly to their cars. Refreshments included hot dogs, chips, drinks and fresh popcorn popped from an old fashion popcorn machine. Each month ASJN will host a different movie, and depending on the crowd, a different location. For details regarding upcoming movies and events, contact Ernest Ward at (601) 201-3020. |
